Chesed

Caring Community is "Chesed"

We are a network of volunteers who come together to support our members in times of need, whether it be an acute crisis, joyous occasion, or a need for ongoing support. It is our goal for our community to become a place congregants feel comfortable turning to when a helping hand is needed. Please consider joining our network of caring by filling out and submitting a CBI Volunteer Profile to share your interests, skills, availability and talents with Congregation B’nai Israel. A variety of opportunities are available during the year to help others and make our Synagogue a viable Jewish community.

"Chesed" Committee

The Hebrew word “CHESED” is the voluntary practice of loving kindness or caring for someone else.

An important part of our caring community is the Chesed Committee. The Chesed Committee works under the direction of our Clergy, providing assistance and emotional support to family members experiencing loss of a loved one.

"Chesed Meals" Committee

Due to need, the “Chesed Meals” program has been re-activated at CBI. Spearheaded by by a group of CBI members, the program is off and running. The name of the program was conceived by Ann Rosenberg, a number of years ago.

One of the volunteers commented,

“After hearing of Ivor scrambling a couple of weeks ago to find food for a CBI member that was suddenly ill, I thought there has to be a better way. So, I contacted a dozen women from CBI and they were totally in. Food was prepared, individual meals made, and stored in the freezer. Now, when Ivor knows of a congregant in need of SHORT TERM meal assistance, he calls me with the name, I touch base with them and deliver meals that day. All names must go through Ivor.”

The assistance provided the congregant in need is short-term. There is absolutely no cost to the congregant receiving the meals.

If you are aware of a congregant who is ill and in need of short-term meal assistance, please contact Cantor Lichterman by email at ilichterman@cbitoledo.org. Please, do NOT submit names to the CBI office staff.
