A fifty-year-old Bridge game provides an unexpected way to cross the generational divide between a daughter and her mother. Betsy Lerner takes us on a powerfully personal literary journey, where we learn a little about Bridge and a lot about life.
After a lifetime defining herself in contrast to her mother’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” generation, Lerner finds herself back in her childhood home, not five miles from the mother she spent decades avoiding. When Roz needs help after surgery, it falls to Betsy to take care of her. She expected a week of tense civility; what she got instead were the Bridge Ladies. Impressed by their loyalty, she saw something her generation lacked. Facebook was great, but it wouldn’t deliver a pot roast.
Tentatively at first, Betsy becomes a regular at her mother’s Monday Bridge club. Through her friendships with the ladies, she is finally able to face years of misunderstandings and family tragedy, the Bridge table becoming the common ground she and Roz never had.
By turns darkly funny and deeply moving, The Bridge Ladies is the unforgettable story of a hard-won—but never-too-late—bond between mother and daughter.

Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the Toledo Museum of Art, 2445 Monroe St., Toledo
This tour at the Toledo Museum of Art will focus on the special exhibit of paintings by the eminent Dutch flower still life painter Rachel Ruysch (1664–1750).
At a time when women’s access to careers as professional artists was severely limited, Ruysch nevertheless became highly successful and widely renowned. Despite the great success she experienced during her lifetime, Ruysch has never received the attention she deserves. The exhibition explores her fascinating life and work for the first time and juxtaposes them with those of her sister Anna, who was an accomplished flower painter in her own right but is all but forgotten today.
We invite you to discover Rachel Ruysch’s masterful brushwork, her illusionistic depictions of the natural world, the astonishing botanical diversity and teeming insect and animal life in her paintings, and how her works reflect the intersections between painting, nature, and science.
The Toledo Museum of Art also houses the Museum Cafe. If you are interested in having lunch before the tour arrive at noon and indicate so when you RSVP. Attendees are responsible for their own lunch expenses.
Tour cost is FREE for museum members, $10 for non-members and parking is FREE!

From the South:
Take US 23 to the Central Ave. Exit, turn left on Central Ave. Take Central Ave. to McCord Rd. (second light), turn right. Take McCord Rd. to Sylvania Ave. (about one mile), turn right, go about 1/4 mile to next light, turn right into JCC/YMCA drive, follow signs.
From the East:
Take I-475 West to Talmadge Rd. Exit, turn right on Talmadge Rd. Go to next light at Sylvania Ave. and turn left on Sylvania. Go about 2 and 1/2 miles on Sylvania Ave. to red light at entrance to JCC/YMCA drive, turn left, then follow signs.
